About Chanakya Chess Club

Chanakya Chess Club (C.C.C) was started under the able hands of Late Dhananjay Ramraje and Geeta Punjabi in the year 2003. The motto since the inception has been “Learn with Fun”. True to this we have been following it in our coaching as well as during the tournaments.

Currently, Salil Ghate and FI. Abhijit Hatkar are actively involved in day to day management of Chanakya Chess Club. Having a core team of extremely efficient & experienced coaches, C.C.C nurtures them in the right module.

Salil Ghate (Partner and Management Head)

A former chess player with 3 times Mumbai University Team title, Salil Ghate is passionate about the game since 16 years.

He has conducted & organized over 100 tournaments of different level from district to International standard.

A true promoter of the game, Salil is involved in conceptualizing and organizing tournaments.

Abhijit Hatkar (Partner and Chief Coach)
(B.Sc. IT, M.C.A, FIDE Instructor, Sr. National Arbiter) FIDE ELO 2053

An International rated player, with global recognition of FIDE, Abhijit is an approved and certified Chess coach, Instructor(FI) and Arbiter(NA) having experience in coaching for over a decade.

Abhijit has been constantly juggling and balancing his passions for chess and technology and now his efforts are directed to synergize the two for the collective good of the “Game”.


His notable achievements are :

  • (DSO) U-17 National Bronze Medalist, held at Visakhapatnam in 2006
  • Captaining Mithibai College Team securing First position – GOLD Medal at the inter-collegiate Team Championship (2010-11)
  • Representing Mumbai University at National Level once in 2007 and at South-West Zone twice in 2008 & 2009

Rakesh Kulkarni (Head Coach)
FIDE ELO 2332 and International Master Elect with 5 norms

4 time Maharashtra State Champion in various Age Categories, IM Elect Rakesh Kulkarni has represented India in more than 40 tournaments in 20 different Countries!

Rakesh has also been working as Indian Social Media Manager for Chess.com – India.


His notable achievements are :

  • Commonwealth Blitz 2013 Champion in Port Elizabeth, South Africa
  • Commonwealth Junior (Under 20) Bronze Medalist 2013 held at Port Elizabeth, South Africa
  • SGFI (DSO) National U-19 Team Gold Medalist, held at Goa in 2012
  • SGFI (DSO) National U-19 Individual Board 1 Gold Medalist, held at Goa in 2012

Coaching, Tournaments & Students

Chanakya Chess Club (C.C.C) is one of the top clubs of Mumbai in organizing tournaments and conducting coaching. CCC was the pioneer in starting Under-6 tournaments to groom talent from a young age.

As part of its ongoing process to harness and tap talent at the grass root level, CCC is organizing events in various schools and colleges and different pockets, in and around Mumbai. Currently there are more than 4000 players & more than 25 schools learning under our banner.

The objective is to spread knowledge about the game & also to tap talent at the grass root level.

Our Inter-School event in March 2006, hosted by the reputed Khar Gymkhana entered the annals of Indian Chess history, when heartthrob of millions Aamir Khan drew against Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte in a Simultaneous exhibition match much to the delight of all. It was rare event in India where a top Bollywood actor not only played against a Grandmaster but drew, thus exhibiting skills in chess and motivating others.
